Barton Gilman receives 2018 Champions of Justice Community Partner Award

PROVIDENCE – Roger Williams University School of Law recently presented Barton Gilman LLP with its 2018 Champions of Justice Community Partner Award.

Champions for Justice has quickly become a hallmark event of the Rhode Island legal landscape, developed to honor and support the students, alumni, partners and friends whose exceptional devotion to social justice increases access to justice for all. Barton Gilman is the first law firm to receive a Champions of Justice Community Partner award.

Barton Gilman’s attorneys provide innumerable hours of pro bono legal service annually to those in need, most notably through the Pro Bono Collaborative, and the Rhode Island Bar Association’s Volunteer Lawyers Program.  In 2008, Barton Gilman joined the Pro Bono Collaborative, working in partnership with Bradley Hospital to provide legal services related to guardianship and its alternatives to low-income families with severely developmentally disabled children. Recently, the firm joined the PBC HOPE Court Project to assist participants with their family and housing legal needs.  Barton Gilman has devoted nearly 1,000 hours of pro bono legal work, and has assisted more than 50 families, through the PBC.  Twenty-eight Barton Gilman attorneys have participated in pro bono work through the PBC since 2008.

Giving back to the community and hands-on involvement with non-profit and charitable organizations are integral to the culture of Barton Gilman.  Attorneys are actively involved in leadership roles at over twenty non-profits in Rhode Island, in addition to serving these and many other organizations as mentors, advisors, and volunteers.

“We are so honored to receive this award from the Roger Williams University School of Law, which we greatly respect for its own significant contributions to the Rhode Island community,” said Kristen Whittle, a partner at Barton Gilman and the firm’s Pro Bono Collaborative liaison. “We also congratulate our fellow recipients, Judge Edward C. Clifton and Luis Mancheno, Esq., and the 2018 Champions for Justice Host Committee.”
